How to Host a Cozy Outdoor Fall Gathering in North Texas

By Jason & Angela

When fall weather actually shows up in North Texas, what time to start so you catch the good light, and how to keep people comfortable after the sun goes down.

The best stretch for an outdoor fall gathering around Dallas runs from mid-October into mid-November. Normal highs at DFW are about 80 degrees in October and 68 in November, with lows near 59 and 48, so afternoons are comfortable and it gets noticeably cooler once the sun drops. Start a couple of hours before sunset, expect it to be about 20 degrees colder by the end of the night, and put a tent over the table if the forecast shows any wind or rain.

At a glance

  • Best window: mid-October through mid-November.
  • Start time: around 5 p.m. in mid-October, when sunset is close to 7. After the clocks fall back on November 1, sunset moves to about 5:30, so start mid-afternoon.
  • After dark: have something warm for guests to wrap up in.
  • Weather backup: an open-sided tent handles a breeze or a light shower without closing the party in.

When is fall weather good for an outdoor party in North Texas?

Fall is the reward for surviving a North Texas summer, but it shows up late. September usually still feels like summer here, and the comfortable evenings tend to start in October. From then until around Thanksgiving you can have people over outside without anyone sweating through their shirt, and a fall party asks a lot less of you than a summer one does.

What time should a fall gathering start?

Aim to start about two hours before sunset. In mid-October that means around 5 p.m., since the sun sets close to 7. Daylight saving time ends on November 1 this year, and after that sunset comes around 5:30, so a November party should start in the middle of the afternoon. You get golden light for the first part of the evening, which does half your styling for you, and the string lights take over after that.

How do you keep guests warm after the sun goes down?

With DFW lows in the upper 40s by November, the temperature can drop fast once it's dark. A tent with open sides helps hold in a little warmth without closing off the night, and it's the smart call if there's any chance of a cool breeze or a passing shower. A blanket folded over the back of each chair is a small touch that guests actually use. String lights overhead turn a backyard into a room and keep the party going once the sun is gone.

How should you set a fall table?

Fall decor can tip into cartoonish fast. Keep it grown up with texture and warm colors instead of novelty pumpkins: candlelight, greenery, dried grasses, and natural materials like wood and linen. One long table under the open sky, set for the whole group, is really all a good fall dinner needs, and you can build it with our tables and chairs plus a few pieces from decorations. A little restraint reads as elegant.

What food works for an outdoor fall party?

Cooler weather makes people want to sit and stay, so plan food that can sit out too. A grazing table, warm drinks, and dishes that hold their heat suit the mood better than anything that has to be served the second it's ready. If you're serving something hot buffet style, chafing dishes keep it warm while people go back for seconds. You want a table nobody's in a hurry to leave.

Questions we get about fall gatherings

Do I need a tent for a fall party?

Not always. If the forecast is clear and calm, a table under the sky is lovely. A tent is worth it when there's a chance of rain or wind, or when you want the space to feel defined after dark.

How many guests fit under a tent?

A common planning rule is about 10 square feet per seated guest. That puts a 20x20 tent at roughly 40 people seated at long tables and a 10x20 at about 20. Add a buffet or a bar under the tent and those numbers go down.
